Game Description
Play the classic game of Gin! Draw, knock or discard. Form melds and eliminate deadwood. It's all here!
Gin Rummy is one of the most popular forms of rummy. Gin Rummy is generally played by two players each receiving ten cards. Gin Rummy, which evolved from 18th-century Whiskey Poker , was created with the intention of being faster than standard rummy. The objective in Gin Rummy is to score more points than your opponent. The basic Gin Rummy strategy is to improve one's hand by forming melds and eliminating deadwood. In standard Gin Rummy, a player may not knock unless he has 10 or fewer points of deadwood. He must knock, a Gin Rummy temr, if he has 0 points of deadwood. Knocking with 0 points of deadwood is known as going Gin or having a Gin, while knocking with deadwood points is known as going down in Gin Rummy.

How to Play Gin Rummy Gallery
GETTING STARTED
Gin Rummy is a card game for two players played with a
single deck. The objective of Gin Rummy is to collect groups of cards of
the same rank and sequences of cards in the same suit while discarding
any unmatched cards.
At the beginning of each hand, ten cards are dealt to each player
and one card is placed face up in the center of the table to become the
upcard of the discard pile. The remaining deck is placed face
down next to the discard pile and becomes the stock pile.
If you are the dealer, your opponent has the option to take the
upcard from the discard pile and play first. If your opponent passes,
you have the option to take the upcard and play first. If neither player
takes the upcard, the player opposite the dealer draws a card from the
stock pile and plays first.
Players alternate turns. To start your turn, draw a card
from either the stock or discard piles and arrange your hand into
collections of sets and runs, known as melds:
Sets are melds of three or more cards sharing the same rank,
such as 7♥-7♣-7♠.
Runs are melds of three or more cards in sequence sharing the
same suit, such as 8♥-9♥-10♥-J♥.
Using the same card in more than one meld is not allowed. Any
card in your hand that isn't in a meld is known as deadwood and
has a point value. Aces are 1 point, face cards are 10 points, and all
others are valued by numerical rank.
During your turn, you may choose to end the hand when the sum of
your deadwood is 10 points or less. This is known as knocking.
If you can knock with 0 deadwood points, you are said to be going
gin. If you can't knock yet (or choose not to), your turn ends when you
discard.
If only 2 cards remain in the stock pile, the hand ends in a draw
and the same player deals again.
KNOCKING
In Gin Rummy, you may knock during your turn when the sum
of your deadwood is 10 points or less.
When you knock, your hand is laid out on the table with melds and
deadwood separated. Your largest deadwood card becomes your final
discard and is not counted in your deadwood points.
Your opponent then lays his own hand onto the table with melds
and deadwood separated. If you are not going gin, your opponent is also
entitled to lay off any deadwood that fits into your melds.
For example, if your knocked with a run of 8♥-9♥-10♥-J♥-Q♥
and your opponent has 7♥ deadwood, your
opponent may lay off the card onto your meld and reduce his deadwood
count by 7.
NOTE: In Oklahoma Gin, instead of
10 deadwood points, the rank of the initial upcard determines the
deadwood limit for the hand, with an ace requiring 0 deadwood points
before knocking. You must knock if you have 0 deadwood points.
SCORING
Gin Rummy games are scored as a series of multiple hands,
with the deal alternating between players.
After each hand, the player who knocked wins the hand if
they have fewer deadwood points. Otherwise the defender wins the hand.
The winner receives a score equal to the difference in each players'
deadwood. For example, if you knock with a deadwood count of 8 points
and your opponent has 10 points after laying off, you are awarded 2
points.
Players can also receive a bonus for each of the following
achievements:
Gin Bonus - 25 Points - Bonus awarded when a player goes gin.
Undercut - 25 Points - Bonus awarded to a defender with a lower deadwood count than knocking player.
Line/Box - 25 Points - Match bonus awarded to each player for hands won during the game (match play only).
Game Bonus - 100 Points - Match bonus awarded to the player who wins the game (match play only).
Shutout Bonus - 200 Points - Match bonus awarded instead of Game Bonus if a player wins every hand (match play only).
NOTE: In Oklahoma Gin, if the
original upcard is a spade, the final score for the hand is doubled.
